Have Them Adjusted

It’s extremely common for people to get their eyeglasses adjusted to perfectly fit their faces, but for some reason, people forget to have their sunglasses adjusted.

Small tweaks of the hinges can make a big difference in comfort. Everyone’s face is slightly asymmetrical, even though we don’t usually notice the differences. Adjusting your sunglasses to fit your unique face will not only make them uniquely yours, but they’ll be less likely to slip or fall.

Use a Protective Case

In our experience, the number one cause of damage to sunglasses is the failure to use a protective case. It’s so easy to just drop your sunglasses in your bag, but there are other hard objects there (like keys and loose change) that can scratch and dent your shades.

Yes, it takes a little extra time to slip your sunglasses into their protective case before you drop them in your bag, but you’ll be rewarded for taking the time. If you just don’t have room in your bag for a protective case, at least wrap your sunglasses in a microfiber cleaning cloth before you stash them.

Don’t Wear Them On Your Head

It’s so easy to push your sunglasses up on top of your head when you step into a building, but there are several reasons why you shouldn’t do this.

First, certain styles of sunglasses are especially prone to getting caught on hair. Vili with the Bar in particular (with their wire nosepieces) can end up yanking your hair when you pull your sunglasses back down, and this motion has bent or broken the bridges of too many pairs of glasses.

Second, depending on the shape of your head, wearing your sunglasses up on your head can stretch out the earpieces. Over time, this stretching makes them too loose, and they begin to slip off when you bend over or look down.

Wash Them Often

Dirt, dust, and smudges are hard on sunglasses. They can damage your lenses if they’re not removed frequently. That’s why it’s important to wash your glasses regularly. If you wear them every day, consider rinsing your glasses in water at the end of the day and allowing them to drip dry. If you don’t have time to allow them to air dry, use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth to dry them. But never use paper towels, napkins, or tissues on your lenses. These paper-based materials have textured surfaces, and they can scratch your lenses. Make sure you use a cleaning cloth for your sunglasses.

Use the Right Cleaners

If your sunglasses are dirty enough that they require cleaner, make sure you use the right kinds of cleaners. Windex and other household glass cleaners can damage your sunglasses because they contain ammonia, which actually tears off the lenses’ coatings.

Instead, use a spray or cleanser designed specifically for cleaning eyeglass lenses. This will help you to clean your sunglasses without damaging any of the coatings or finishes.
