How People Lose Their Sunglasses, and How to Prevent It

How People Lose Their Sunglasses, and How to Prevent It

Sep 29th 2020

Do you struggle with how to take care of your sunglasses? Do you seem to be losing them often? Why are sunglasses so easy to lose? Maybe it’s because we take them off and put them on so frequently as we go from indoors to outdoors and from sunshine to shade. Maybe it’s because we’re having such a good time when we’re wearing them that we forget to be responsible. Maybe it’s because they become such a part of us that we just stop thinking about them.

Whatever the reason, most of us can use a few reminders and tips on how to avoid losing our men’s sunglasses and women’s sunglasses. Let's start by looking at some of the ways sunglasses get lost. After all, recognition is the first step toward solving a problem. Fortunately, we have a solution for each of these problems. While you’re at it, take some time to learn about the differences between polarized and non-polarized sunglasses and the sunglasses trends for fall 2017, as well as a few perennially popular sunglasses styles. If you're having trouble keeping them clean, check out our guide on how to clean sunglasses!

Dropping Them in Water

Most sunglasses don’t float, and it only takes a few seconds for them to disappear into a body of water, never to be seen again. Fishermen, boaters, and regular beachgoers are all too familiar with this problem. A fisher may lean over the edge of the boat to wrestle an especially feisty catch, and before he knows it, his sunglasses are gone.

Luckily, there are several things you can do to prevent this problem. Start by making sure your sunglasses are fitted properly to your face so they don’t slip when you look down. You can also use a neck strap if you’re going to be doing something especially active near water. This is also helpful for people who commute on ferries.

Leaving Them in Another Person’s Car

You probably have a special place for your sunglasses in your own car. You might keep them above the windshield visor, in a door compartment, or even in a cup holder. But it’s a totally different ballgame in someone else’s car. The worst part about leaving your sunglasses in someone else’s car is that it can be really hard to track them down.

What can you do to prevent this issue? It helps to have a mobile “home” for your sunglasses. If you carry a backpack or purse, designate a specific pocket just for your sunglasses. It may also help to carry a glasses case with you to prevent scratches on your lenses while your glasses are in your bag.

Losing Them on Amusement Park Rides

Most amusement parks post signs near their rides reminding guests that they’re not responsible for lost or damaged items. While these signs can be easy to ignore because they're overly familiar, every time you see one of these signs, try to remember to think of your sunglasses and put them somewhere safe for the duration of your ride.

Breaking or Losing Them While Playing Sports

Wearing your sunglasses while you play beach volleyball or touch football is a great way to protect your eyes, but all of that movement and motion definitely puts your sunglasses at risk of damage.

As previously mentioned, neck straps can be helpful for preventing your sunglasses from falling off, but if you’re worried about a neck strap interfering with your performance, consider buying a special pair of sunglasses just for sports. For example, check out our line of mirror polarized sunglasses, which have lenses that come in many different colors, including blue, red, green, brown, silver, and gold.

Losing Them at Home

Just like car keys, sunglasses have a way of hiding from you, even when you're at home. The best way to solve this problem is to create a home for them and always, always, always put them away. A small basket or box by the door can be extremely helpful: simply drop them in the box when you get home and pick them up on your way out. An easy habit like this could potentially save you hours of hunting for your sunglasses. (This works for your keys, too!)
